چکیده

A series of measurements of single pion electroproduction on the proton, deuteron, and He was completed recently at Je erson Laboratory by the NucPi Collaboration. The data form the rst part of a study of longitudinal electroproduction in light nuclei. The goal is a determination of the longitudinal cross section in parallel kinematics by means of a Rosenbluth separation, and a search for target-mass dependent e ects. Longitudinal pion electroproduction should be sensitive to nuclear pion currents because of the dominance of the pion-pole process for charged-pion emission in the direction of the virtual photon. The mass dependence of the longitudinal cross section should provide insight into the absence of any enhancement of sea quark distributions in nuclei as measured in deep-inelastic scattering. Data have been obtained at Q = 0:4 GeV , forW = 1:15 andW = 1:6 GeV from H,H, and He, and for a range of values of Q on H and H at W = 1:95 GeV . Results from the analysis of these data are discussed, and a run plan of 400 hours of beam for completing this study is presented.

Longitudinal electroproduction of charged pions from (1)H, (2)H, and (3)He.

Separated longitudinal and transverse cross sections for charged pion electroproduction from (1)H, (2)H, and (3)He were measured at Q(2) = 0.4 (GeV/c)(2) for two values of the invariant mass, W = 1.15 GeV and W = 1.60 GeV, in a search for a mass dependence which would signal the effect of nuclear pions. This is the first such study that includes recoil momenta significantly above the Fermi surf...

A Study of Longitudinal Charged Pion Electroproduction in D2, He3, and He4

We propose to study longitudinal charged pion electroproduction (in the excitation region below the delta isobar) along the direction of the momentum transfer where the charge scattering process dominates. Direct comparison of the cross section per nucleon in deuterium and the helium isotopes with the experimental value for the free nu-cleon will provide estimates of the strength of the nuclear...

Pion charge radius from charged pion electroproduction

We analyze a low-energy theorem of threshold pion electroproduction which allows one to determine the charge radius of the pion. We show that at the same order where the radius appears, pion loops induce a correction to the momentum dependence of the longitudinal dipole amplitude L01 (2) . This model-independent correction amounts to an increase of the pion charge radius squared from the electr...

Determination of the pion charge form factor at Q2=1.60 and 2.45 (GeV/c)2.

The 1H(e,e'pi+)n cross section was measured at four-momentum transfers of Q2=1.60 and 2.45 GeV2 at an invariant mass of the photon nucleon system of W=2.22 GeV. The charged pion form factor (F(pi)) was extracted from the data by comparing the separated longitudinal pion electroproduction cross section to a Regge model prediction in which F(pi) is a free parameter. The results indicate that the ...

We describe the pion electroproduction processes in the ∆(1232)-resonance region within the framework of chiral effective-field theory. By studying the observables of pion electroproduction in a next-to-leading order calculation we are able to make predictions and draw conclusions on the properties of the N → ∆ electromagnetic form factors.
